The History of the Neodesha Fire Department
The Neodesha Kansas Fire Department was started October 4th, 1898 with 24 Volunteer Firefighters. They had 2 teams of 12 men, who pulled hose carts to each fire scene. The volunteers purchased their first horse drawn hook and ladder wagon for $500 in 1902.
The following year in 1903 the very first Fire-station was built in Neodesha and remained in use until 1998.
In December of 1908 the volunteers purchased their first piece of motorized equipment, a 1908 Webb and it cost $850.
In 1921 the City of Neodesha took over the Fire Department as a Paid Fire Department.
At the original cost of $12,000 the City of Neodesha bought their first Pumper, an American-LaFrance in 1922. The truck was manned by Paid Firefighters for the first time that same year.
In 1976 the Neodesha Fire Department suffered their only Line of Duty Death. Assistant Fire Chief Howard Lour, died of a heart attach while en-route to a fire in the city. Assistant Chief Lour had worked for the Neodesha Fire Department for over 10 years.
On January 1st, 1980 the Neodesha Fire Department took over EMS Services for the City of Neodesha and part of Wilson County. Since 1980 the Neodesha Fire Department has been thru 7 different Ambulances with the purchase of a brand new Horton Ambulance in May of 2014.
In 1994 the City hired their first Paramedic.
In 1998 The Neodesha Fire Department celebrated 100 years of service with the opening of a brand new Fire-station on October 3rd. The new station would replace the existing station that was first built in 1903 with a cost of just under a million dollars. To Celebrate they had a Centennial Celebration, an open house at the Fire-station, a Firetruck Parade and a Fireman's Ball. Along with the station opening they celebrated the unveiling of the new Neodesha Fallen Firefighters Memorial in front of the the new station.
That October Bill Graves, the current Kansas Governor proclaimed that the month of October 1998 was "Neodesha Firefighter Appreciation Month." This was a honor for the Department.
The Neodesha Fire Department currently consists of 9 Paid Firefighters, 2
Part-time and 7 Volunteers.
